Design Camp Recap

I took the opportunity to mingle with everyone the night before the conference at a tweetup hosted by The Creative Space. Throwing back beers provided by St. Arnold Brewery and chatting it up with fellow design/web geeks is a great way to spend a Friday night.

Here’s a recap of the presentations I was able to attend.

The Church of Internetology

These two goth girls put on a great show full of sporadic dance moves and “internet prayers”. I really liked the overall message (privacy is dead resulting in accountability).

iPhone App Design

This presentation was given by Adam Houghton, the principle developer of ForeFlight. Here’s a list of his guidelines for developing and designing iphone apps.

  • Finger is not a mouse (40px by 40px click area)
  • No help on the iphone (usability out of box a must)
  • Everything is a table
  • Copy Apple design for ease of use
  • Icons are very important
  • Users are on the go (no one sits at a desk anymore)
  • Polish Graphics

What I’ve Learned in My Career

The conversation Christapher and I were having about getting good constructive criticism when designing nicely segued into Roby Fitzhenry’s excellent presentation. Ok, so the slides (or lack there of) were not the greatest but the key points Roby was making were right on. I heard a positive and uplifting story from a passionate designer who absolutely loves what he does.

So what did I learn most from Design Camp 2009? Conferences are a great experience and tote bags can look pretty damn cool.
